Get the application from iOS App Store : https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sms-spam-stopper/id1451769591

SMS Spam Stopper is an extension that blocks the unwanted and spam SMS from the Messages application. The blocked SMS are placed inside “Unknown & Junk” section of the “Messages” application. In order to enable this extension, please visit Settings -> Messages -> Unknown & Spam. On this page, please enable “Filter Unknown Senders” and “SMS Spam Stopper”. The video to setup the extension is available on the main page of the application.

Tip 1 – Blocking SMS –  In order to make sure that the SMS from a sender gets blocked, please delete that contact from the Contacts of the phone. The application filters only those senders who are not saved in the Contacts of the phone.

Tip 2 – Allowing SMS / Whitelisting SMS – Similarly, if you think that a SMS from legitimate sender is marked as spam, just add that sender’s number to the Contacts of the phone. The application will no longer mark the sms from that person as spam.  After this, when the next SMS is received from the same number, it will automatically be moved to “Contacts & SMS” section of the Messages application of the phone. To allow SMS from a service like “VK-AMZN”, please add it to the “Allowed Words” section. (Please add VK-AMZN in this case.)

The SMS Blocking could be configured based on various options as explained below :

1. Heuristic Detection

Please keep this option enabled to automatically detect the unknown SPAM messages. Heuristic analysis uses artificial intelligence to detect the unknown spam messages using its database of 5000 spam messages.

Note : It will detect a message as spam only if it does not have allowed words and when it is not from a sender in the phone’s contacts.

2. Allowed Words

Please add the words that you wish the application to whitelist for a SMS. If a SMS contains the allowed keywords from an unknown sender, the application will not identify it as SPAM. The application does not consider the case sensitivity of the words. Hence “OTP” , “otp” or “oTp” all are considered same by the application.

3. Allowed Numbers

The allow SMS from a number, please be sure to add it to your phone’s contact list. The numbers that are in the contact list of the phone will never be treated as spam.

What if a SMS is already identified as spam and moved to “Unknown & Junk” section ?

In this case also, please save the number to the phone’s contacts. After this, when the next SMS is received from the same number, it will automatically be moved to “Contacts & SMS” section of the Messages application of the phone.

To allow SMS from a service like “VK-AMZN”, please add it to the “Allowed Words” section. (Please add VK-AMZN in this case.) You could also add the common words found in the text of the SMS to the “Allowed Words” list of the application.

4. Blocked Words :

Please add the words that you wish the application to identify as SPAM. The application comes with pre-populated list of around 600 known SPAM keywords. This makes sure that any SMS containing these spam words is blacklisted automatically. Case sensitivity of the words are automatically ignored by the application for better results.

Note : If there is a SMS from sender who is in “Contact” list of the phone or which contains “Allowed Words”, the application will not blacklist them even if it contains blocked keywords. Hence, please make the settings accordingly.

5. Blocked Numbers :

This setting could be very useful if you are getting SMS from a particular number many times. If the number in a SMS matches with the blocked number, it will directly be blacklisted. If there is already a SMS from the blocked number in “Contacts & SMS” section of the messages, it will automatically be moved to “Unknown & Junk” section when the sender sends sms again next time.

Troubleshooting – If a SMS is not blocked by the application:

If you have received a spam sms, please add the sender of that sms to the “Blocked Numbers” list of the application. Also, you could add the words that are in that sms to “Blocked Words” list of the application. This will make sure that you do not receive the spam sms from that sender again. Also, please check if the application is setup and settings are optimised as shown below :

a) Please verify if the sender is not there in you contact list. Otherwise, the sms will be considered legitimate by the application and iOS.

b) Please verify the words that are present in the incoming SMS with the words that are saved in the “Allowed Words” section in the application. It might be matching with some words in the SMS.

c) Also, please enable the “Heuristic Detection” and “Abusive Words Detection” section in the application.

d) Do the spam SMS contain some words repeatedly? Please try adding these words as well to the Blocked list. For example, If you see that multiple spam sms repeatedly contain a link for example : http://xyz.com, then please add the word “http” to the blocked list.

e) Please check under Settings -> Messages ->”Unknown and Spam” – Please verify if the iMessage Filtering and SMS Filtering are setup as shown in the video in Main Page of the application.

f) After this, please reboot the phone once. (Important step)
